Metal Spikes Anyone?

A war of words broke out on Twitter last week between two of the game's best known names over the use of metal spikes.

Ian Poulter, one of the most prolific tweeters on tour, wasn't happy when he finished his first round at Bay Hill and tweeted the following message:

“The greens got crusty out there this afternoon baked in the heat & wind & plenty of spike marks. why do people still use spikes?"

That outburst drew a reaction from Rory McIlroy who fired back with:

“I wear spikes… Problem!?!? If you got your swing speed over 100mph, you might need spikes too…".

The Irishman did add a smiley at the end of his tweet to indicate it was all in good humour but it seems Poulter was serious with his complaint.

Only a handful of players still wear metal spikes but the issue is bubbling away under the surface with several other players also complaining about the problem at Bay Hill.

According to the US blog www.weiunderpar.com, both Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson told the site metal spikes were a problem in certain conditions though neither went as far as calling for a ban.

Ian Poulter Loses Out to Stewart Cink

The defending champion has been eliminated on the first day by Stewart Cink who is a tough, proven performer in this event, and kept nipping at Poulter's heels all day in the first match out.

The match stayed squared through six holes (both players doubled the sixth, by the way), then Poulter finally took the lead when Cink bogeyed the seventh. The Englishman remained in the lead. When Cink conceded the 14th hole, Poulter was 2 up with four holes to play. But Cink bounced back with a birdie at the drivable par-4 15th.

A Poulter bogey at the 17th -- his approach shot failed to find the green -- squared the match. At the 18th hole, Poulter just missed on a 16-foot birdie putt that would've ended the match. Cink then won the 19th hole when his approach shot at the par-4 first landed inside of four feet.

"I don't know that there's a tougher match play opponent in the field than Ian Poulter," Cink said. "This is a big win for me." Cink's record in this event is now 22-11 while Poulter becomes the first defending champ to be knocked out in the first round since Steve Stricker lost to Chris

DiMarco in 2002.

Poulter said: "I really should have shut the match out, to be honest with you.

"Every credit to him. He holed putts at the right time and that's what you have to do in this format.

"He putted me off the golf course. I missed my chances and therefore I have been punished."

Poulter Fans Decide on Arizona Colours

With more than a million followers, Ian Poulter is one of the PGA TOUR’s most-engaged tweeters. Not to mention, he’s the leading fashionista.

So Poulter decided to let his fans decide what he should wear when he faces Stewart Cink in Wednesday’s first match of the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship.

The "Dress Ian" campaign launched on Jan. 5 and ended Wednesday.

Fans could vote on three different outfits on the tournament’s Facebook page. Turns out, they chose the red-white-and-blue one — which not unsurprisingly corresponds with the colours of the nearby University of Arizona.

"I sent a couple of Tweets out during the year," Poulter said Tuesday. "And it’s nice to be able to offer something back to the fans."

Of course, with the possibility of frost when he tees off, we might have to wait a few holes before we get the full affect of the outfit. Here’s what Poulter tweeted on Monday evening.

"Teeing off at 7.25 on Wednesday not sure why its that early but anyway, i will be wrapped up warm, Mitts, skins undergarment, beanie,"
