Angel Cabrera
Angel Cabrera of Argentina will make his first appearance at the Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com March 10th - 13th.
Cabrera is the only South American to win two major championships. In 2007 he beat Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk by one stroke to win the U.S. Open, and in 2009 he won the Masters in a two-hole playoff against Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry.
“I am really looking forward to the tournament,” said Cabrera. “I have heard great things about the golf course and the resort. It’s not easy to shoot low scores but it’s been necessary to do that to win at Trump International Puerto Rico. That makes it a good challenge for me and an exciting tournament for both Puerto Ricans and visitors.”
Since it began in 2008, the Puerto Rico Open has offered several exemptions to promising young players from Latin America and the Caribbean, and Cabrera’s entry can only bolster that initiative.
As a representative of Argentina at the World Cup nine times and a member of the last three Presidents Cup International teams, Cabrera is eager to help develop golf as a participant sport and as a vehicle for charitable giving in the Caribbean and South America. The product of humble beginnings himself, Cabrera is well aware of the opportunities the game offers.
“The game has provided me an excellent living,” said Cabrera, “but I believe it can be valuable for those who embrace it without thinking of being a professional. The PGA Tour, seepuertorico.com and other supporters of the event have an opportunity to continue to do great things with the Puerto Rico Open and I’m happy to be a part of it.”
