Sergio Garcia Showing Improved Form

Sergio at the Dubai Desert Classic

Three bogeys on the back nine cost Sergio Garcia the lead of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic but still leaves him within two shots of the joint leasers - Rory McIlroy, Thomas Aiken and Anders Hansen.

There are signs over the past few weeks that Garcia is regaining some form and has reignited his interest in the game.

Garcia is seeking his first win since November 2008 during which he has fallen from second in the world to his current 79th and also took time away from the game to rediscover his zest for the game.

He did not drop a single shot in his first two rounds and though he started with a bogey on Saturday he recovered to claim the lead when Rory McIlroy slipped back with four bogeys on his front nine.

However, the lead had narrowed again to one after a Garcia bogey at the 434 yard par four 14th, with former World Number One Tiger Woods just two shots back at seven under.

He shot a best-of-the-day 66 in round two and after an uncertain start in windy conditions at the Emirates Golf Club he recovered to be four under through six holes of his back nine, including an eagle three at the tenth.

But he slipped back down the field to 6 under when he double-bogeyed the 359 yard 17th..

Speaking about the 17th, he said: "It was unfortunate, I thought I was doing pretty well in the conditions. I didn't play the back nine that badly, I was holding it nicely and I had a couple of chances to get to ten (under). The good thing is that I'm still in it, I could have had a one-shot lead, but that's the way it is."

There is a strong Spanish flavour at the top of the leader board as 2010 Challenge Tour Number One, Alvaro Velasco, shot a 65 to climb into a share of fourth place after making the cut with nothing to spare and joins fellow country man Alvaro Quiros, who carded a round of 68.
