The family of Britain’s richest man has built a £15m bolthole within driving range of the five-star Gleneagles hotel and golf club in Scotland.
The property, on the outskirts of the Perthshire resort, belongs to the family of the Indian-born steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, who is worth an estimated £22 billion.
The original house was torn down to make way for a bespoke property with seven bedrooms, two kitchens and a gym, with wallpaper and soft furnishings by Ralph Lauren. It is surrounded by an 8ft wall and backs onto the golf course.
It will afford Mittal a front-row seat for the 2014 Ryder Cup, scheduled to be held at the Gleneagles resort’s PGA Centenary course.
Neighbours say Mittal, 60, and his wife, Usha, have flown in by helicopter several times to ensure the holiday home project goes according to plan.
Estimated at £12m, delays and changes, including scrapping an £80,000 bathroom, have pushed up the cost.
Mittal topped The Sunday Times Rich List for the sixth year last year.
In 2004, Mittal acquired a house and three mews properties in Kensington Palace Gardens for more than £57m. He reportedly paid £70m and a record £117m for two others in the same street in 2008.
Highland sporting estates are still popular with the super-rich, despite the recession, says George Goldsmith, an Edinburgh property agent.
