European Tour champion Andrés Romero of Argentina was unstoppable on his way to a second victory at the Torneo de Maestros Copa Personal on the Tour de las Americas (TLA) last Sunday.
His performance at Olivos Golf Club in the event he first won in 2006 improved Romero’s tally of victories on the TLA to seven.
The 29 year old had led for the last three days, finishing with a three under par round of 68 which increased his advantage to five strokes. His 13 under par aggregate score of 271 tied the tournament record.
His countryman Fabián Gómez started the day with an eagle at the opening hole to get to within one stroke of the long-time leader. But he was unable to produce more fireworks, and fell away with three bogeys and only two birdies to sign for a round of 70 and take a distant second place.
“I came focused on winning the tournament and managed it,” said Romero, who won the Deutsche Bank Players’ Championship of Europe in 2007. “I knew it was going to be difficult, with such a strong field competing. Fortunately, I was able to recover from last week’s flu to hold off a player as good as Fabián, who has had an excellent year. Although my ball striking was not that neat, I managed to collect some crucial birdies.”
