Philip Walton Writes to Taoiseach

Following the Taoiseach Brian Cowen’s apology on Wednesday evening on RTE News - following his live radio interview on Tuesday – the  1995 Ryder Cup hero who became involved in the story, Philip Walton, continues to feel  anger at the week’s events.

Walton said on Thursday; "Suzanne and I have written to the Taoiseach, Mr. Brian Cowen, to get an explanation from him personally regarding the stories reported in the media over the past few days."

"From what I have heard and read so far the stories are of concern to myself, my wife and also my children as they have seen reports on “You Tube”. As a result, we felt the best thing at this point was to write to An Taioseach ourselves to get more details and the exact context of the various stories.”

Walton is part of that elite list of Irish Ryder Cup heroes which includes  Christy O'Connor Jnr who did the same in 1989. Years later both were joined by Paul McGinley in 2002 and Darren Clarke in 2006.

In 1995 at Oak Hill in Rochester, New York, the Dubliner two putted the final green in the crucial penultimate singles match to beat American, Jay Haas, securing a historic win for European captain, Bernard Gallacher.

As reported by Sky News the Taoiseach, Mr. Cowen, had been among many party members, including senior Government ministers, in the hotel bar until the early hours of the morning.

Renowned as a great mimic, he entertained colleagues with impressions of Irish golfers Philip Walton and Des Smyth.

Philip Walton was a successful Amateur golfer - playing in two Walker Cup's before turning professional in 1983  to d played on the European Tour  where he won three titles.

He currently plays on the Irish PGA Region and is a four time winner of the Irish PGA Championship.

Walton is also part of FORE Ireland and works with younger golfing talents seeking to reach the European Tour.
