Mortimer Plays Out of His Skin

David Mortimer of FORE Ireland will let his golf do the talking when he tees up in the Skins PGA Fourball Championship at Forest Pines on October 6-8th, 2010.

The quietly spoken Mortimer has plenty to shout about having tasted victory the last time he crossed the Irish Sea when he scooped the flagship PGA Professional Championship at The Oxfordshire.

But the foreirland.com representative will take his customary low-key approach with partner Kevin McGrath (Birr) as they seek victory in the 54-hole event at the Lincoln course.

"At the start of the season, I was a bit cautious about how well things would go, but I'm not one for boasting and saying I'll do this and that," said Mortimer.

"I always knew what I was capable of and I feel it's best to be quietly confident.

"Winning at The Oxfordshire was good, I had a bit of luck on my side but I was pleased to win it. In fact I didn't realise how big an event that was until I played it."

Mortimer is now focused on ensuring he and McGrath are in sync for the final where they will be up against defending champion Stuart Taylor (Island) and new partner James Erskine from Portpatrick Dunskey.

The Irish Region is also represented at Forest Pines by brothers Leslie Walker (Dundalk) and David Walker (Foxrock) who won the qualifier at Headfort plus finalists Chris McVitty (Bundoran) and Michael Mulryan (Athenry) and Peter Hanna (Lurgan) and Paul Stevenson (Portadown).

"Probably our biggest fault is that we don't really dovetail with each other, we make too many birdies at the same time instead of alternating them," added Mortimer.

"We've been over there a few times now but last year we didn't do so well and missed the cut.

"Forest Pines is a very tight, tree-lined course and you have to get your drive just right otherwise it'll beat you up.

"I hope we'll be in contention but if not we'll certainly enjoy the event.

"But last year it was an Irish pairing that won it so it would be nice to keep that run going this time. It was good to see them win."

The popular 54-hole event is being sponsored for the first time by Skins - a market leader in compression and therapeutic sportswear - and carries a £5,000 first prize for the winning pair.

"Sponsoring the PGA Fourball Championship demonstrates our long-term commitment to golf," said David Ling, Skins general manager for the UK and Europe.

"We are very excited about the tournament and look forward to meeting the PGA professionals who contest it."
