Jim "Bones" McKay and Phil Mickelson in 2010
Phil Mickelson, winner of 39 PGA TOUR events, and the No. 4 ranked player on the Official World Golf Ranking, committed today to play in the Wells Fargo Championship, scheduled for May 2-8.
Mickelson will be making his eighth appearance in the Wells Fargo Championship. Last year, he finished second to Rory McIlroy by four strokes.
"Phil has consistently competed in our tournament since 2004 and we always are glad he chooses to come to Charlotte. He is not only one of the most talented players in the game, he is also popular among the sports fans," said Wells Fargo Championship Executive Director, Kym Hougham.
Mickelson holds the Wells Fargo Championship record for the most top ten finishes. He has five top ten finishes in seven appearances. Along with his solo second a year ago he finished T5 in 2004, T7 in 2005, T3 in 2007 and T5 in 2009.
This will be Mickelson's first appearance on the PGA TOUR since the Masters Tournament.
