Lisa Maguire Wins Spanish Amateur Title

Lisa Maguire

Lisa Maguire from Slieve Russell beat France’s Emilie Alonso on the final hole to win the Spanish International Ladies Amateur Championship at Sherry Golf Jerez, Cadiz, on Sunday.

Lisa continued her magnificent week long form into this morning’s final and matched her French opponent to turn all square after nine. Lisa edged ahead to take a one hole lead to the sixteenth tee box and ended the hopes of the French woman closing out the tie on the home green.

Lisa has played superbly all week.

In Saturday’s semi-final she dispatched one of Germany’s top Internationals Antonia Scherer 5&3 having never looked back after establishing an early lead. Earlier in the day, she had ended English International Holly Clyburn’s hopes of an overseas title when she held her nerve to close out the match at the third tie hole having been 3 down through eleven.

In the first round, Lisa was unfortunate to meet fellow International teammate Danielle McVeigh (RCDL) which again took three tie holes to decide before seeing off Spanish starlet Luna Sobron Galmes in the afternoon of the top European women’s amateur event.

Lisa’s sweet revenge for Alonso’s defeat of twin sister Leona in the quarter finals should catapult her into the top 20 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings for women golfers, where Leona currently lies 5th, and secures a second European title for the ILGU’s High Performance squad after Leona’s win in the Portuguese Open Amateur Championship at the end of January.
