Lisa Maguire Reaches Spanish Final

Lisa Maguire

Teenage twin Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) beat Germany’s Antonia Scherer to reach the final of the Spanish International Ladies Amateur Championship at Sherry Golf Jerez, on Saturday.

Lisa dispatched one of Germany’s brightest upcoming stars, Antonia Scherer, and never looked back after establishing an early lead to close out the match on the fifteenth green. Earlier in the day, Lisa ended English International Holly Clyburn’s hopes of an overseas title when she had her strong iron play and solid putting stroke to thank for her third extra tie hole victory.

Maguire had earlier in the tournament dispatched fellow International teammate Danielle McVeigh (RCDL) and Spanish starlet Luna Sobron Galmes on her way to the final in this top European women’s amateur event.

Lisa now faces top French International Emilie Alonso in the final on Sunday morning. Lisa will need no motivation to secure a top European victory as the French woman defeated Lisa’s twin sister and third qualifier Leona in the quarter finals on Saturday morning.

The 18 hole final starts at 9am local time at Sherry Golf Jerez, Cadiz, when all Irish hopes will be pinned on the young Cavan teenager’s quest to secure Ireland’s first major European title since Danielle McVeigh triumphed at the 2009 British Strokeplay at Royal Aberdeen.

Also at stake are valuable World Amateur Golf Ranking points which could see Maguire top the table among the world’s elite.
