Make Ryder Cup Four Days Says Seve

Severiano Ballesteros

The Ryder Cup format should be stretched from three days to four, according to Seve Ballesteros.

He also suggested that the all of the players could compete on the first day, rather than just a selection. Ballesteros said the wait from when players arrive for the tournament on Monday to when play begins on Friday is "sometimes very long ... you really want to play and start the competition".

"Everything in life can improve and changes can be beneficial," Ballesteros added. "The event could go to four competition days, which would be good for everyone."

"Also, the players all really want to play in the competition on day one. For the audience it is also good because they see more golf, and it's good for the sponsors and television. I think that would be a positive change."

The 53-year-old, who was part of four Ryder Cup winning teams, is still recovering from surgery performed in 2008 to remove a malignant tumour from his brain.

The Spaniard, eight times a Ryder Cup player and the winning captain in 1997, says he is "mentally well, but physically I'm very tired" after starting a new therapy programme in December.
