McVeigh Running Out of Steam

The last three weeks may have just proved too tough even for the talented Kilkeel player coming as it has at the end of a challenging year – which has included the loss of her Father only weeks before playing the Curtis Cup In Exeter, Massachusetts last June.

The race for a professional tour card has included criss-crossing the Atlantic in recent months as McVeigh played in the Ladies Professional Golf Association Qualifying School in early October at the Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Florida, where she finished in 22nd place - earning a spot at the LPGA Final qualifying.

In Buenos Aires Danielle then represented Ireland in the Espiritu Santo Trophy along with Leona and Lisa Maguire in the World Amateur Team Championships in mid October after which she retuned for the next stage of the Ladies European Tour [LET] Pre-qualifying School at La Manga, Spain, from November 29th to December 2nd – where she secured a place in the Final Q School which takes place this week.

After that result Danielle McVeigh then returned to play the LPGA Final Qualifying at Daytona Beach, Florida, from December 9th to 12th but ended her campaign following rounds of 77,81, 78 and 79 – missing the cut.

Within days McVeigh was heading back to La Manga for the five round LET Final Q School and after three it appears that she might have run of steam after an opening round of 81, followed by a round of 77 and signing for 83 on Friday

Having started with a double bogey on the tenth things did not improve for the 2010 Curtis Cup star - with only a single birdie carded at the 1st hole – and a total of nine dropped shots to sign for an 82 on 23 over par total.

Martina Gillen of Team Ireland finished the day with another 3 over par round to retain a share of 27th place and inside the top fifty places ahead of the cut at the end of Saturdays’ fourth round.

Gillen dropped four shots in the third round but benefited from her opening birdie to sign for a 76 - and a nine over par total.
