Q School Proving Tough Irish Exam - R 2

At Arcos Gardens Gareth Shaw of Team Ireland repeated his opening round with another 74 on Saturday to finish on four over par in 34th place – the best placed of the Irish players at the venue.

Jonathan Caldwell of Team Ireland completed day two with a round of 79 and dropped back to 6 over par.

Michael McGeady of McCambridge Duffy ended the day on 15 over par after a round of 83.

Niall Turner of Muskerry Golf Club signed for a one over par second round of 73 for a three over total and slipped back to a share of 57th place.

Gary Murphy of Oceanic Developments showed form that has abandoned him for the most of this season to sign for a three under par 69 to move up the leader board to 2 over par - in a share of 37th place.

Stephen Grant , the former Shamrock Rovers striker, finished day two with a three over par 74 to undo the steady round of day one and falls back to a three over par total.

Mervyns Owens of Mallow Golfclub dropped to five over par after carding a second round of 73.

Barrie Trainor of Team Ireland fell back to 6 over par after signing for a one over par round of 73.

Each 2nd Stage event will be contested over 72 holes of stroke play with 18 holes being played each day. There will be no cut during 2nd Stage, however, a competitor is entitled to withdraw at the conclusion of any round provided that notification is given before the close of play each day.

The exact number of qualifying places available at each venue will be calculated once the exact number of Second Stage participants has been calculated.

At European Tour Qualifying School last year Ireland had 6 representatives at the Final Stage at the PGA Catalunya in Girona with 10 players in all not progressing to the season finale.

The group included Niall Kearney, winner of the Brabazon Trophy last year and member of the 2009 Walker Cup team; Simon Thornton, a former Assistant Professional at Royal County Down; Gary Murphy, seeking to regain his card ten years after first securing playing rights; and John Kelly, a protégé of Padraig Harrington and the TItleist Performance Center.

In the end only Thornton and Murphy were amongst the lucky thirty last year.

The results from Costa Ballena have yet to be released.
