Jonathan Caldwell started playing golf at age 11 after being introduced to the game by his father, Brendan. By the age of 16 he was off scratch, having spent several summers playing 36 holes a day at Clandeboye Golf Club in his native Northern Ireland.
Jonathan attended the same University in South Alabama (USA) as Gareth Maybin, winning two tournaments on the US College circuit including the 2008 Sunbelt Conference beating Heath Slocum's 12 year record by one stroke (205).
Caldwell represented Ireland in Home Internationals from 2006-2008 and was twice European Team Championship winner (2007&2008). Caldwell was also a member of the 2007 Great Britain & Ireland Walker Cup team, and played alongside good friend Rory McIlroy in the foursomes.
In September 2008, while still an amateur, Jonathan won First Qualifying Stage of Tour School (Section B) at Oxfordshire Golf Club. In November the same year, Caldwell turned pro before competing at Second Qualifying Stage, where he finished tied 15th at Montenmedio G&CC.
Coached by Royal Belfast professional Andrew Ferguson, who accompanied him to the Qualifying School – Final Stage at PGA Golf de Catalunya, Caldwell finished in tied 30th to secure a place on The European Tour International Schedule for the first time.
During his rookie season Jonathan made 4 cuts from 14 events and so turned his attention to playing Challenge Tour, where in only 8 events managed to finish 112th in the Order of Merit.
In 2009 a triple bogey on his final hole, meant Caldwell missed out on the four round cut-mark at the Final Stage of Tour School ending his hopes of playing back-to-back seasons on the European Tour.
In 2010 the Challenge Tour has been the focus for Caldwell and in ten events he only missed the cut four times with his best finish at the Moroccan Golf Classic with a 7th place.
