Johan Edfors of Sweden equalled the lowest round of The European Tour season at the Vivendi Cup 2010 completing the opening round in 61 after making the turn in 31 shots.
The European Tour's first-ever 59 was a possibility at that stage, but the former Barclays Scottish Open and British Masters champion bogeyed the next before finishing with two more birdies.
Edfors holds a two shot lead over England's David Dixon who ended the day with a 63.
Dixon’s compatriot John Parry was joined by France’s Jean-François Remesy in a tie for third on eight under after carding rounds of 64.
The scoring was such that Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley did not make the top 20 with their four under par rounds of 68 on the Marly Course.
On the Retz Course, Gary Murphy finished 3 under par after signing for a 69.
Peter Lawrie finished his opening round with a two over par 74 following two dropped shots on holes 14 and 15.
Simon Thornton of Team Ireland made the turn in 35 and started the 10th with a bogey, which he followed with a double bogey on the 11th hole. Then two more dropped shots on holes 17 and 18 dropped him back down the field to 4 over par.
